SCL Fundraiser gets spooky in the stacks (and beyond)

Nov 12, 2025

SHARPSBURG, PA – Sharpsburg Community Library’s (SCL) next fundraiser invites patrons to enjoy a frighteningly good evening at several haunted hotspots.

On November 1, SCL will partner with Bump in the Night Society, a Pittsburgh-based paranormal investigation group, to host the inaugural Haunted Sharpsburg Paranormal Experience. From 7 to 10 p.m., attendees will learn the ins and outs of ghost hunting and conduct their own investigations of the library and the nearby Linden Gym.

SCL Branch Manager Sara Mariacher said the fundraiser came to fruition after she attended the Harris Theater’s monthly Steel City Horror Show, a “secret horror movie with a horror host and special guest each month.” “Halloween is my absolute favorite time of the year. Our Development Manager Nadine Ostrowski and I discussed doing a fundraiser in the fall, so I knew anything I planned would fit into spooky season,” Mariacher said. “Earlier this year, Bump in the Night Society was the (Steel City Horror Show) guest, so I pitched the idea of a paranormal investigation – with another spooky idea as a backup, in case it didn’t manifest.”

Thankfully, Mariacher said, Bump in the Night Society Lead Investigator Sean Bowman was excited to help SCL through a special event. “Bump in the Night Society has extensive experience conducting investigations of sites, including the Andrew Bayne Memorial Library and Tour-Ed Mine. Their group is comprised of both skeptics and believers, and they were featured in Pittsburgh City Paper in 2024,” Mariacher said. “The investigators leading our event are generously donating their time and expertise and providing the equipment we will be using, ensuring that all proceeds benefit the library – a truly sweet Halloween treat.” Mariacher also contacted the Sharpsburg Historical Commission, who connected her with Linden Gym Director Greg Domian.

The gym is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl named Hanna. “Greg was very enthusiastic about us attempting to contact the ghost at the gym and gave us approval to visit the site for our fundraiser, which will be split between the library and the gym,” Mariacher said. “I’m excited to raise money – and spirits – with this fundraiser. I’m also curious to learn if there’s any paranormal activity at the library and to experience the haunting at Linden Gym!”

The Haunted Sharpsburg Paranormal Experience is open to adults ages 18 and older, or teens age 16 and older with a participating adult. Tickets are $25 per person. All proceeds benefit the library. Participants will be required to sign waivers and should wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes they can easily move around in, as the group will be walking between investigation sites at night.
